The Bowl Was Not Kind, but the Rockers Rocked!
The Hollywood Bowl on April 17 did not do Rockers Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks any favors.
Deserved better were these music greats.
THB presented Stevie with a BLACK floor and background, making her essentially a floating head. Seriously? Did no one consider that the purple/black-clad icon might opt for - oh, who knows - black? She seamlessly blended in. AND her backup singers were placed WAAAAAAAY off to the side of the stage. Stevie seemed a bit misplaced, which is unfortunate because THB could have, and should have, created a more intimate setting for her.
Thankfully, Stevie managed to rise above the criticisms and deliver her all on an impersonal, lackluster stage, with the audience mostly chatting over her more emotional solos and brief explanations. I would have appreciated hearing her speak a bit more (if I had been able to hear her).
Rod, as usual, was entertainingly funny, but the microphone situation was less than ideal. Many of his words were muffled - or maybe he hadn't used that mic before? One of his backup musicians managed to achieve some decent sound from it, but perhaps he should consider switching to a head microphone, freeing him up in the process.
Rod's energy, humor, and quick costume changes (jacket, shoes, and tie) were impressive. However, I take issue with one "intermission" when he allowed one of his backup singers to perform a solo. She added a nice touch during the introductions of the singers, but with all due respect, we had not come for a solo from anyone other than Stevie and Rod, and I suspect she was not as well received as she could have been.
Both Rod and Stevie exhibited great respect towards each other and their respective teams, introducing everyone and providing insights into the backup performers. It was wonderful to witness Rod and Stevie singing together - I wish they had shared more moments.
First time being disappointed with the Bowl! I may need to save up for a box seat, or at least seats closer to the stage. The Hollywood Bowl audience has become increasingly rude and rowdy, speaking loudly during the performances and becoming more intoxicated and disruptive. They can do that at home. I HOPE that the pricier seats are more considerate. If not, I may just have to forgo future visits. What a shame. I look forward to hopefully seeing Stevie in a smaller venue next time.
